Optical Technologies -
Future of the German Economy

Experts from industry, science and politics agree: the 21st century is the ‚century of the photon‘ and its use for the benefit of our society. Optical Technologies are the key technologies for the future, and will decisively influence our further technological development.

Being a traditional optics and photonics location, Germany has an excellent starting position on the threshold to the ‚century of the photon‘. Many German enterprises belong to the world leaders in optical technologies.

In view of the worldwide turnover in Optical Technologies industry associations predict annual growth rates between 10 and 20 percent. Already today, around 15 percent of jobs in the German manufacturing industry are directly or indirectly dependent on this key technology, which - according to the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) - corresponds to approximately one million members of the national workforce.

The about 1,000 medium-sized enterprises which operate in optical technologies and provide 36,000 jobs expect a growth of employment of over 40 percent by 2010. This corresponds to more than 15,000 new high-tech jobs*).

Competence Networks for Optical Technologies

The enormous economical and scientific potential of Optical Technologies must be preserved and enhanced through innovation-supporting cluster structures. The German Competence Networks for Optical Technologies connect industry, research, education, the finance and consulting sector as well as politics, with the aim of jointly furthering the development and applica-tion of Optical Technologies, and thus to help promote economic growth and employment in Germany.

For this purpose, the German Competence Networks for Optical Technologies are sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Educa-tion and Research (BMBF) within the national funding programme for Optical Technologies.

These regional competence networks, founded with the support from the BMBF, united in the nationwide association OptecNet Deutschland, and set up a central office. Through these measures a unique interregional network structure was created.
